We love to feed people, it's in our nature, our history and our blood. Tamarind Tree started as a need to pass on the food we adore, the stuff that feeds our souls as well as our bellies onto...anyone who wanted feeding really!
If you've been here since the beginning you might have joined us for Samosa Chaat at a market nearby, it was all going pretty well and then ‘you know what’ happened and we had to rethink fast. We set up up our kitchen at Burke Road and started small batch cooking our favourite dishes there for you to take home and enjoy. And we love it, really we do…BUT there’s nothing better than cooking for you in the moment, to see you enjoying our food, our way. So of course, as and when we could, we started to introduce that back into the Tamarind Tree…starting with hot samosas and spring rolls with your takeaway (we know you all ate them on the way home) before bringing you our favourite street food served at the kitchen window for lunch and then our infamous Dinner @ The Yard over the last two summers.
When 87 High Street appeared on the market, it seemed the logical next step for us to find a space we could make our own, where we could feed you our way, creating an ambience and an experience to nourish you right alongside the food we know you love. And where we don’t have to hang onto that gazebo when the wind gets up!
Of course, Totnesians will be familiar with 87 High Street as the home of Willow for almost four decades and it was no small decision to take on such an institution. But when the current owners retired and left a gap up in The Narrows, we wanted to make sure fantastic, wholesome, locally made food was still available in that much loved space.
And that’s what we’ll do! Willow will dish up its last service this week after which we’ll be closing for a week or two to make some changes in the space to make it work for Tamarind Tree.
There’s still lots to figure out before our reopening but we do know that we’ll be open from Tuesday to Saturday in the daytime with hot drinks, snacks, cakes and the lunch food you know and love. And we’re really excited to be opening on Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner service.
We’ll be keeping Unit 5 Burke Road for all your hot snack and chilled takeaway needs of course.
